Australian Aboriginal Languages Face Extinction

Endangered Languages

A significant number of Aboriginal languages in Australia are at risk of extinction due to declining use among younger generations and a lack of written records.

Language Loss

At the beginning of the 21st century, only around 150 Aboriginal languages were still in daily use out of a total of hundreds of distinct languages spoken in the past. Many of these remaining languages have very few speakers and are primarily used by older adults.

The lack of written records for many of these languages compounds the problem, as there is limited documentation to support their preservation and revitalization efforts.

The loss of these languages not only represents a loss of cultural heritage but also a loss of valuable knowledge about the environment, history, and traditions of Aboriginal peoples.
